I think the idea of Essential Questions is great. It really gets the mind going in all osrts of directionsa nd stimulates lots of discussion. These open ended questions allow any student to have an opinion and understand their is not just one answer. However, that being said I need to find a way of how to use this idea inthe math classroom - where there is typically one correct answer. I guess the discussion of how to do the problem or a plan of attack or even just a what if.. will allow students to feel more part of the education process. A lot of things go through my mind of a how I can incorporate these ideas into the classroom now. All the information and ideas are a bit overwhelming at times and I get frozen in place with how my unit plan is proceeding.
Pg 3.04: "Independent" brainstorm: How could you incorporate the Internet into your classroom to further enhance student learning in regards to research, communication, and collaboration?
Always easier said than done. Students always "drift" off subject and end up wasting a lot of time. It does take constant monitoring and homework on my part to point them in the right direction. With this project, I am encouraging them to design a playground that requies them to research the cost of basic materials as well. IThe "centerpiece" of the playground is from specific websites I have chosen and direct them to browse. Which actual playset they choose is up to their group. With regards to communication, I'm not sure we're ready for blogging but I may give it a try. I know that it can organize conversation and thought somewhat but I also feel it can bea distraction of sorts because it can become another "texting" or "IM" tool for the kids rather than a way to share ideas.
